FFR holds training workshops for criminal defence lawyers, judges and police officers. A workshop “Representing Individuals Facing the Death Penalty” for lawyers from the Islamabad District Bar Association was held in November 2013. The Instructors included Robert McGlasson, Catherine Higham from the British legal charity, Reprieve UK, and Barrister Mirza Shahzad Akbar from FFR. Robert McGlasson is a senior trial attorney from the USA with 30 years experience as a defense lawyer in capital punishment cases. The workshop was aimed building the capacity of Pakistani defense lawyers by sharing the experiences of death penalty defense attorneys in other jurisdictions. Each participant at the start of the conference was given a “death penalty applications handbook” based both on Pakistani law and international jurisprudence as a ‘how to’ guide on the filing of innovative motions in court in order to more effectively represent clients facing death row. The participants mainly included practicing criminal defense lawyers along with retired judges and police officers.
